Today, the island is a special municipality of the Netherlands. It is part of the Dutch Caribbean along with Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao, Saba, and Sint Maarten. Together with Bonaire and Saba, it is known as the BES Islands. Travelers can reach the island by flying into the F. D. Roosevelt Airport.

The island has a long history of changing hands.

The earliest inhabitants were the Arawaks, followed by the Caribs. The Arawaks called the island Aloi, which means "Cashew Island." European explorers like Francis Drake and John Hawkins saw the island in 1595. From the 1600s until the early 1800s, the island changed owners twenty-one times. It moved between the Netherlands, Britain, and France. In 1636, the Dutch West India Company took control. Before that, Dutch settlers had called the island Nieuw Zeeland. The name Sint Eustatius is Dutch for Saint Eustace.

During the 1700s, the island became a very busy place for trade.

It was known as the "Golden Rock" because it was so profitable. The island was a free port with no customs duties. This helped it become a center for many different goods. However, the island also played a dark role in history. It was a major point for the transatlantic slave trade. Enslaved Africans were brought to the island to work on large plantations. These farms grew crops like sugarcane, cotton, tobacco, coffee, and indigo. A two-story slave house once stood at the Waterfort to hold people.

Sint Eustatius was very important during the American War for Independence.

The island supplied American rebels with many things, including gunpowder. In November 1776, a ship called the Andrew Doria arrived at Fort Oranje.

The ship carried a copy of the Declaration of Independence. Captain Isaiah Robinson fired a thirteen-gun salute to the American flag. Governor Johannes de Graaff replied with an eleven-gun salute.

This was the first time a foreign official recognized American independence. This event is famously called "The First Salute."

The island's success eventually led to conflict with other nations. The trade between the island and the United States helped cause the Fourth Anglo-Dutch War. In 1781, a large British fleet arrived to take the island.

Admiral George Rodney led the fleet to capture the island. The British had over 1,000 cannons, while the island had only twelve. After the British took control, the French recaptured the island ten months later. Later, during the Napoleonic Wars, the island changed hands again. These many changes in control eventually caused the island's economy to collapse.
