It is the second smallest province in the country. About 1,388,000 people lived there in early 2023. The province is surrounded by many other places. It borders Gelderland to the east and south-east. South Holland sits to the west and south-west. To the north and north-west, it meets North Holland. The Eemmeer water is found in the north-east.

Many important towns are found here. The capital city is named Utrecht. Other big towns include Amersfoort, Houten, and Zeist. You can also find Nieuwegein, Veenendaal, and IJsselstein. The busiest railway station in the whole country is Utrecht Centraal. It is located right in this province.

The land in Utrecht has many different looks. In the east, you will see the Utrecht Hill Ridge. These hills were left by moving ice long ago. The soil there is sandy and does not hold much food for plants. Because of this, many pine trees have been planted there. The south of the province is a landscape of rivers. In the west, you will mostly see green meadows. The north has large lakes. These lakes were made by digging up peat from bogs.

People enjoy using these lakes for boating and fishing. One very pretty area is the Vecht region. It sits on both sides of the Vecht river.

Utrecht has a very long history. It started in the year 695. A man named Saint Willibrord became the first bishop there. He settled in an old Roman fort. Later, the bishops became Princes of the Holy Roman Empire in 1024. There were many fights over the land in the past. During the Hook and Cod Wars, there were two civil wars. In 1527, the Bishop sold his lands to Charles V. This made the area part of the Habsburg lands. Later, Utrecht joined the Dutch Revolt in 1579. It then became part of the Dutch Republic.

In more recent times, Utrecht saw many changes. During World War II, German forces held the province. On May 5, 1945, the German forces in the Netherlands gave up. Canadian forces arrived on May 7, 1945. Some towns even moved into Utrecht later on. Oudewater moved from South Holland in 1970. Woerden joined in 1989, and Vianen joined in 2002. Leerdam was the last to join in 2019. Today, the province is divided into 26 different municipalities. These include places like Bunnik, Soest, and Rhenen.

Utrecht is a place where nature and people meet. Big groups that protect nature have offices here. The WWF has a branch office in Zeist. Another group called Natuur en Milieu is in Utrecht city. Many people from different countries live here too. In 2020, many residents had parents from Morocco or Indonesia. The province is also very important for the economy. In 2018, its economic output was 71.5 billion euros. This was a large part of the whole country's output. People even have a special song for the province. It is called the provincial anthem.
