Around 50 CE, they built a fort called Traiectum near the Rhine river. This fort helped protect the edge of their empire. The river flowed a different way back then, through what is now the Kromme Rijn. Roman soldiers lived in the fort, and others lived in nearby settlements. These people were traders, workers, and families. Over time, the name changed from Traiectum to the Dutch name Utrecht.

Since the Rhine river moved, the city built many canals. These canals have a unique system called wharfs. People built storage rooms, called werfkelders, right at the water level. You can walk down stairs from the street to reach these rooms. This is different from other canal cities like Amsterdam. In most other places, the water sits right next to the road.
