The land in South Holland is mostly flat. Much of it is made of polders. These are areas of land reclaimed from the water. The west side has many big cities. The east side is more green and has many farms. People call this area the Green Heart. Near the coast, you can find sand dunes. In the northwest, people grow many flower bulbs in the soil.

Water is a huge part of life here. The Rhine-Meuse-Scheldt delta flows through the province. This water eventually drains into the North Sea. The south of the province is made of many islands. These islands sit inside the river delta. Some islands are used for farming. Other islands have big industries. The Port of Rotterdam is the busiest seaport in Europe.

This place has a very long history. People lived here at least 7,500 years ago. They were likely nomadic hunter-gatherers. Later, the Romans built fortresses along the borders. They built sites near modern towns like Leiden and Valkenburg. After the Romans left, many different groups ruled the land. The County of Holland began to form a long time ago. In the 1600s, this area became very famous for art and science. Famous painters like Rembrandt lived here.

The province has changed many times over the years. In 1840, it was officially split into North and South Holland. This was done because the land was too large and wealthy. The weather stays mild because of the ocean. Summers are cool and winters are not too cold. It can be very windy during the winter months. Rain falls throughout the year, but the first half of the year is often drier.
