This system is very important for moving large groups of people quickly. In 2015, about 175,000 people rode Lines A, B, and C every day. Lines D and E carried about 145,000 riders each day. The system is run by a group called RET.

Trains get their power in a few different ways. Most of the tracks use a third rail to provide electricity. This rail has a thick metal strip on the bottom for power. The rail sits on yellow insulating material to keep people safe.

Some lines use overhead wires instead of a third rail. On these lines, a part on top of the train called a pantograph touches the wires. Some trains even switch between the rail and the wires while they are moving.

The history of the metro began many years ago. The first line was the Noord–Zuidlijn, which opened in 1968. It ran from Centraal Station to Zuidplein and went through a tunnel under the Nieuwe Maas river. At that time, it was one of the shortest metro lines in the world. A second line, the Oost–Westlijn, opened in 1982. In the late 1990s, the lines were named after famous citizens named Erasmus and Caland.

Today, the metro uses letters and colors to help riders. This makes it easier to see the different branches of the lines.

Line A and Line B both run in the northeast part of the city. Line B was extended to Nesselande in September 2005. Line C branches off at Capelsebrug and goes to De Terp. Line D runs from Rotterdam Centraal to De Akkers in Spijkenisse. Line E is part of the RandstadRail and connects to Den Haag Centraal.

Learning about the metro helps us see how cities work. It shows how engineers use different tools like third rails and overhead wires to move trains.

The system even connects to other railway lines, like the one to Hoek van Holland. RET even has plans to make the system even better in the future. They want to add new lines to areas like Feijenoord City. They also hope to make the trains run even more often using automation.
