The Trollhätte Canal is a special waterway in Sweden.

It connects the Göta river to the large Lake Vänern. This canal is 82 km long in total. Most of the path follows the riverbed of the Göta Älv river. Only 10 km of the canal was made by people. In 2004, it became a national monument.

Some people think it is part of the Göta Canal. However, these two waterways are actually separate entities. Together, they form a huge 390 km path called Sweden's Blue Ribbon. This path connects the North Sea to the Baltic Sea.

Moving boats through the canal requires special tools called locks. Locks help ships move between different water levels. The canal has six locks that lead downstream toward Gothenburg. The first is Brinkebergskulle sluss, which is 6 m. Next is Tvåan, which is 9 m. Then there is a triple lock staircase called Slusstrappan. This staircase is 23 m long. The last lock is Ströms sluss at Lilla Edet. It is 49 km from Gothenburg and is 6 m. These locks help ships climb or descend the water.

This waterway has a long history in Sweden. The canal first opened in the year 1800. Many years later, the current locks were built in 1916. These locks use materials from over a hundred years ago. Because they are old, they must have regular maintenance. The locks often struggle with the effects of water and ice.

This work is hard because ice can be very strong. The canal stays open for cargo nearly all year. It only closes for short times in the winter.

Large ships use the canal to move goods. These ships can weigh up to 4000 tonnes. In 1990, ships carried 3.5 million tonnes of freight. By 2015, that number dropped to 1.5 million tonnes. This decline happens because of competition from roads and rails. Also, the old locks are too small for modern ships. The biggest ships that fit are called Vänermax. They can be 88 m long and 13.40 m wide. They also need 5.40 m of depth to float.

Experts say the locks might not be safe after 2030. Because of this, Swedish authorities have a big plan. They want to renovate the canal infrastructure soon. This work is planned for the years 2025 and 2026. They hope to finish everything by 2030 or 2032.

This will help the canal work better for the future. Just like a road needs fixing, a canal needs care. Keeping the locks strong helps the water flow safely. It ensures that ships can continue to travel through Sweden.
