The Welland Canal is a vital water path in Ontario, Canada.

It connects Lake Ontario to Lake Erie. This canal is a part of the much larger St. Lawrence Seaway. Ships use it to travel between these two Great Lakes. They must use it because Niagara Falls blocks the natural river path. The falls make the Niagara River impossible for ships to sail through. Without this canal, goods could not move easily between the lakes.

To move ships over the high land, the canal uses locks. A lock is a chamber that acts like a water elevator.

The current canal has eight locks in total. Seven of these are long locks called lift locks. They raise or lower ships as they move between different heights. The eighth lock is a guard lock at Port Colborne. This lock helps adjust for the changing water levels in Lake Erie. It takes a ship about eleven hours to travel the whole way.

People have built this canal four different times to make it better. The first canal opened on November 30, 1829. It was very long and used 40 wooden locks. William Hamilton Merritt helped start this first project. The second canal used stone locks instead of wood. It was built between 1841 and 1845. The third canal was even deeper and wider. It featured 26 masonry locks to help ships pass through.

The fourth canal is the one that people use today. Construction began in 1913, but World War I caused a delay. It finally opened on August 6, 1932. This canal is much bigger than the old ones. It is deep enough to hold very large vessels. It allows two large ships to pass each other in opposite directions. About 3,000 ships pass through the canal every year. This helps move cargo from places like Chicago and Detroit.

The canal connects many important places and industries. It helps ships reach the Port of Montreal and Quebec City. These ports allow ships to reach the ocean for international travel. The canal is much shorter than other paths like the Erie Canal. It provides a direct link from Port Colborne to Port Weller. Even though it is an old idea, it still works well. It helps keep trade moving across North America today.
