It runs east to west between the Hudson River and Lake Erie. This path connects the Atlantic Ocean to the Great Lakes. This connection was very important for the whole country. It helped people move across the Appalachian Mountains much easier. Before the canal, moving goods was a very hard job.

The canal helped the United States grow toward the west. It also helped New York state become very wealthy and strong.

Moving things on water is a very smart way to work.

On a soft road, a horse might pull a small load. But a single mule can pull a heavy barge on a canal. A barge can hold 60,000 pounds of weight. This is much more than a horse can pull on land. Using a canal could cut the cost of shipping by 95 percent.

To move up and down hills, the canal uses locks. Locks are like water elevators for boats. The canal has 35 locks to help boats change height.

Many people had big ideas for this canal long ago.

People talked about a canal in the 1720s. In the 1780s, George Washington also wanted a canal. Later, a man named Jesse Hawley pushed for the project. He wanted farmers to sell grain more easily. New York Governor DeWitt Clinton became the main leader for the plan. Some people did not like his idea at all. They teased him by calling it "Clinton's Big Ditch."

Construction finally began in 1817 with $7 million.

The canal opened on October 26, 1825. It was the second-longest canal in the whole world. At that time, only the Grand Canal in China was longer. The canal was a huge success from the start. The money from tolls paid off the debt in one year. In 1855, the canal had 33,000 commercial shipments. Many cities grew fast because of the water, like Albany and Buffalo.

Today, the canal looks different than it did long ago.

Many parts were widened to make the New York State Barge Canal. The old canal was used for heavy business for a long time. It stayed busy until about 1902 when tolls were removed. Later, trucks and new sea ways made it less busy. Now, people use the water for fun trips.
