Lake Erie is a huge body of water in North America.

It is the fourth-largest of the five Great Lakes. It also sits on the border between Canada and the United States. The northern shore belongs to the Canadian province of Ontario. On the other sides, you will find the U.S. states of Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York.

The lake is the smallest of the Great Lakes by volume. It is also the southernmost and the shallowest lake in the group.

Because the lake is shallow, it behaves in unique ways. The water stays warmer than the other Great Lakes during the summer. In 1999, a very warm summer almost made it too hot for two nuclear power plants. These plants need cool water to keep their reactors safe. In the winter, Lake Erie is often the first to freeze.

In the western part, the water is very shallow. A small breeze can quickly create lively waves called seiches. These waves can build up very fast during a storm.

Water moves through the lake in a steady way. The Detroit River flows into Lake Erie from Lake Huron. This is the lake's main inlet. After that, the water flows out through the Niagara River.

This moving water passes Niagara Falls to create hydroelectric power. This power helps both Canada and the United States. Some water also moves through the Welland Canal. This canal helps ships travel from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario.

Long ago, the land looked very different. Glaciers carved out the shape of the lake. These huge sheets of ice were thinner as they reached the south. This is one reason why the lake is so shallow today.

Before the lake formed, different lakes like Lake Warren existed here. The name "Erie" comes from an Indigenous word. The word erielhonan means "long tail."
