It sits on the border between the United States and Canada. To the north and east, it touches the Canadian province of Ontario. In the United States, it is bordered by Minnesota to the west. Michigan and Wisconsin sit to the south of the lake. This lake is the largest freshwater lake in the world by surface area.

It is also the third-largest freshwater lake by volume. The Caspian Sea is larger, but its water is salty rather than fresh.

The water in the lake moves in a very specific way. It drains out through the St. Marys River into Lake Huron. From there, the water flows through the lower Great Lakes. It eventually reaches the St. Lawrence River and the Atlantic Ocean. More than 200 rivers feed into the lake basin.

These include the Nipigon River and the St. Louis River. Because the lake is so big, it takes a long time for water to move through it. It has a retention time of about 191 years.

People have known about this place for a very long time. The Ojibwe people call the lake "Gitche Gumee." This name means "great sea."

In the 17th century, French explorers found the lake by traveling through the Ottawa River. They called it "Lac Superior" because it was the upper lake. Later, the British changed the name to Superior. They did this because the lake was superior in size to other lakes. This happened after they took control of the area in the 1760s.

Lake Superior is a place of huge numbers and deep waters.

The surface area is about the size of South Carolina or Austria. It has a maximum depth of 1,333 feet. A scientist named J. Val Klump reached the deepest point in 1985. The lake contains 2,900 cubic miles of water. This is enough water to cover all of North and South America in a thin layer.

During storms, waves can grow to be over 23 feet high.

The lake is shaped by very old earth history. It sits in a long, extinct valley called the Midcontinent Rift.

About 10,000 years ago, a thick sheet of ice covered the whole area. As the ice melted, it carved the land into the shapes we see today. This left behind many islands, like the large Isle Royale.
