It connects Lake Ontario to Lake Erie. Ships use it to bypass Niagara Falls. The falls make the river too rough for boats.

To move ships over hills, the canal uses locks. A lock is a special part of the canal.

It acts like a water elevator. The current canal has eight locks. Seven of these are long locks. They raise or lower ships between different levels. One lock is a guard lock. It helps adjust to the water depth in Lake Erie.

People have built this canal four different times. The first canal opened in 1829. It had 40 wooden locks. Later canals were made deeper and wider. This helped them carry larger ships. The fourth canal is the one used today. It opened in 1932. It is much bigger than the old ones.
