It flows north from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario. The river forms a border between the United States and Canada. It is home to the massive Niagara Falls. These falls have three main parts. The Horseshoe Falls is the largest. The American Falls is the second largest. The Bridal Veil Falls is the smallest.

Other large islands include Grand Island and Navy Island.

People use the river for power. In the 1880s, it was the first place to make electricity on a large scale. This is called hydroelectricity. Today, power plants on both sides of the border make power.

The river also has a deep part called the Niagara Gorge. This area has rapids and a large whirlpool. Ships use the Welland Canal to go around the falls. This helps them travel safely between the Great Lakes.
