This path has six locks. Locks are parts that help boats move between different water levels. The locks help boats go downstream. Some locks are in a group. We call this a triple lock staircase. Large ships use the canal. They can carry up to 4000 tonnes. But fewer ships use it now. In 1990, ships carried 3.5 million tonnes. In 2015, they carried only 1.5 million tonnes. This is because of roads and trains. The locks are also very old. They were built in 1916. They are too small for modern ships. They also struggle with ice. People plan to fix them soon. They want to finish the work by 2032.
