The Panama Canal is a man-made waterway.

It cuts through the narrow Isthmus of Panama. This path connects the Caribbean Sea to the Pacific Ocean. It is a great shortcut for ships. Without it, ships must travel around the tip of South America. This long trip can be very dangerous.

To move ships, the canal uses locks. Locks are like water elevators.

They lift ships up to Gatun Lake. This is a large lake made by a dam. After crossing the lake, locks lower the ships back down.

The canal has two types of locks. The original locks handle Panamax ships. New, wider locks handle even larger Neopanamax ships.

Building the canal was very hard. France tried to build it first in 1881. Many workers died from tropical diseases. The French project ran out of money in 1889. The United States took over in 1904. They opened the canal in 1914. Today, Panama manages the canal. It helps trade move all around the world.
