It is in Germany. This canal links the North Sea to the Baltic Sea. It helps ships save time. They do not have to sail all the way around Denmark.

Many ships use this way. About 32,000 ships pass through every year. That is about 90 ships every day. They carry 100 million tonnes of goods.

Workers built the canal between 1887 and 1895. It took over 9,000 workers eight years to finish the job. Kaiser Wilhelm II opened it in 1895. Later, Germany made the canal wider. This let big warships pass through.
