It sits between Africa and Asia. The canal connects the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea. This path makes travel much faster for big ships.

Instead of sailing around Africa, ships can go straight through. This can save about 8 to 10 days of travel.

Building the modern canal took many years. A man named Ferdinand de Lesseps started the work. They built it from 1859 to 1869. The canal officially opened in November 1869.

Today, the Suez Canal Authority of Egypt runs the canal. It is a very busy place for trade. In 2021, more than 20,600 ships traveled through it. That is about 56 ships every single day.

Egypt even worked to make the canal wider. This helps more ships pass through at once. The new parts helped make the canal even bigger.
