It sits right at the border between Africa and Asia. This long path of water connects the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea. By doing this, it creates a direct link between the North Atlantic and the northern Indian oceans.

Ships use this route to avoid sailing all the way around Africa. This shortcut is very helpful for global trade. It can save a journey from the Arabian Sea to London by about 8 to 10 days.

How the water moves in the canal is quite interesting. The canal has no locks to move ships up or down. Instead, seawater flows freely through the whole path.

In the north, the water flows north during the winter months. In the summer, the water flows south. South of the Great Bitter Lakes, the water changes with the tides at Suez. This natural movement helps keep the water moving through the channel.

People have tried to build canals in this area for a very long time. Ancient rulers like Necho II and Darius I worked on early versions.

The modern canal we know today began with a French diplomat named Ferdinand de Lesseps. He formed a company in 1858 to build it. Construction lasted from 1859 until 1869. The canal officially opened on 17 November 1869.

This expansion was meant to nearly double the number of ships that can pass through each day.

Because it is such a vital path, the canal has seen many big changes. It has played a major role in military history and world politics. For example, the canal was closed for eight years after the Six-Day War in 1967. It did not reopen until 5 June 1975.
