Volga–Don Canal

technology Maturity 9-11 Next article →

The Volga–Don Canal is a vital waterway in Russia. It connects the Volga and Don rivers at their closest points. This path is part of a larger system of deep water routes. It provides the shortest way for ships to travel between the Caspian Sea and the world's oceans. Ships move through the Sea of Azov, the Black Sea, and the Mediterranean Sea to reach the ocean. This canal makes moving goods across large distances much easier.

Moving ships through the canal is a step-by-step process. The canal uses locks to help ships change height. A lock is a chamber with gates that acts like a water staircase. There are nine single-chamber locks on the Volga slope. There are also four locks on the Don slope. These locks raise or lower the ships to match the river levels. Three powerful pumping stations use water from the Don to keep the levels right.

People have wanted to connect these rivers for thousands of years. A fortified place called Tanais existed in the Don delta a long time ago. In 1569, the Ottoman Empire tried to dig a canal to help trade with Central Asia. They only finished about one-third of the work before bad weather stopped them. Later, Peter the Great tried to build a canal in the late 1600s. His first attempt was very short, only 4 kilometers long. He also tried a second project called the Ivanovsky Canal, but it was too shallow.

Today's canal was finally finished by the Soviet Union. Construction began before the Second World War but was interrupted. From 1948 to 1952, about 900,000 workers built the canal. This group included 100,000 German prisoners of war and 100,000 gulag prisoners. The canal officially opened on June 1, 1952. It is so important that the composer Sergei Prokofiev wrote music to celebrate it.

Many different things travel through this waterway every year. Ships carry coal from Donetsk, minerals, grain, and building materials. They also move lumber and oil products. The canal can even move huge objects. In 2016, a piece of a nuclear power plant moved through the canal. It was 13 meters high and weighed 330 tonnes. In 2004, about 10.9 million tonnes of cargo moved through the canal.
