It flows from Lake Ladoga into the Neva Bay. This bay is part of the Gulf of Finland. Even though it is only 74 km long, it is a very powerful river. It has the fourth-largest average discharge in Europe. This means it carries a huge amount of water. It flows past the city of Saint Petersburg and several towns like Shlisselburg and Kirovsk.

Many boats use the river for travel and trade. It is part of the Volga–Baltic Waterway and the White Sea–Baltic Canal.

The river has a very interesting beginning. Long ago, the area was covered by a sea.

Glaciers moved across the land and shaped the ground. Scientists think the river is actually quite young. It may have formed between 1410 and 1250 BC. This happened when water broke through a valley to connect different areas. This event created the Ivanovskye rapids. The river's path has stayed mostly the same for 2,500 years. The banks are often low and steep.

The Neva has a very long history. It was once used for trade between Scandinavia and Byzantium. The name Neva might come from Finnic words for a waterway or fen.

The river was also the site of the Battle of the Neva in 1240. This battle gave the leader Alexander Nevsky his name. Later, the city of Saint Petersburg was founded on the river in 1703. The river saw many difficult times, such as the Siege of Leningrad during World War II.

Nature looks very different along the Neva. The water is fresh and can be quite cold.

In the winter, the river freezes from December to April. The ice can be quite thick in Saint Petersburg. You might see birch or pine trees growing near the banks.

Because the water moves so fast, not many types of fish live there. Perch, ruffe, and roaches are common residents. Some people also fish for smelt or salmon. The river's delta is full of many islands and small canals.

Living near the Neva comes with some challenges. The water level can rise and cause floods.

Floods can happen from melting snow or from the sea. There have been over 300 floods since the city began.
