It is a place of high peaks and wide valleys. Many people visit to see the famous natural sights.

The most famous feature is Mount Elbrus. This is a volcanic mountain and the highest peak in Europe. It reaches a height of 5,642 meters. The mountain stays covered in snow all year long. It has 22 glaciers that provide water to the land. These glaciers feed three important rivers called the Baksan, Malka, and Kuban. Other tall mountains like Mount Dykhtau also stand in the area.

Water is found everywhere in this republic. There are about 100 lakes scattered across the land. None of these lakes are very large. However, 55 of them sit between the Baksan and Malka rivers. One lake, Tserikkel Lake, is quite deep at 368 meters. There are also many rivers like the Terek, which is 623 km long. The rivers flow through the mountains and the plains. These waters help the local environment stay green and healthy.

The history of this land goes back a very long time. The ancestors of the Kabardins lived here since at least the 6th century BCE. They once had a kingdom known as Zichia. Over many centuries, different groups controlled the area. The Mongols ruled from 1242 to 1295. Later, the Georgians governed the region for a while. Between 1769 and 1830, the area was part of the Russo-Circassian War. Eventually, it became a republic within the Russian Federation.

Many different groups of people live in Kabardino-Balkaria today. As of the 2021 Census, the population was 904,200. The Kabardins are the largest group at 57.1%. The Balkars make up 13.7% of the people. Russians make up 19.8% of the population. Most people here follow Islam, which is about 70.8%. The capital city is Nalchik. The republic also has natural resources like coal and tungsten.
