The history of this land goes back a very long time. Some experts believe the upland areas were part of the cradle of Indo-European culture. Many different groups have lived here, including the Scythians and the Sarmatians. Later, the Alans lived in the area before the Mongols arrived. The Kalmyk people are of Oirat Mongolian origin. Their ancestors moved from the steppes of southern Siberia to the Volga region around 1630. They were looking for plenty of grass to feed their animal herds.
