geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The North Caucasus is a special part of Russia. It sits in Eastern Europe. This area is part of a larger place called the Caucasus region. This region helps separate Europe from Asia.

The North Caucasus is the southernmost part of Russia. It has many different areas called republics and krais. One very large city in this area is Krasnodar. Many people call this region Russia's "sunbelt." This is because the weather is milder than in other parts of Russia.

Nature makes this place look very interesting. To the west, you will find the Sea of Azov and the Black Sea. To the east, the Caspian Sea sits by the land. In the south, the huge Caucasus Mountains rise up. One very famous mountain is Mount Elbrus. It is the tallest peak in all of Europe.

The land also includes flat areas called steppes. These areas have fertile soil that is used for grazing and farming. The Manych River helps mark the northern boundary of these steppes.

People have lived here for a very long time. You can find old artifacts from the Early Bronze Age.

Ancient cultures like the Koban culture once lived on this land. In the 1800s, the Russian Empire took control of the area. This happened after a long conflict called the Caucasian War. Between the 1850s and World War I, many people had to leave. About one million people became refugees in the Ottoman Empire. This created a large group of North Caucasian people living in many other countries.

Today, the region is divided into several specific parts. These include the Republic of Adygea and Karachay-Cherkessia. Other parts are Kabardino-Balkaria, North Ossetia–Alania, and Ingushetia. You will also find Chechnya and the Republic of Dagestan. Further north is the land of Kalmykia.
