North Asia

geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

North Asia is a huge part of the Asian continent. It covers about 13,132,900 square kilometers of land. This is 29.4% of all the land in Asia.

The region is made of three parts of Russia. These are the Ural, Siberian, and Far Eastern districts. To the north, the Arctic Ocean meets the land. The Pacific Ocean sits to the east.

It also sits near Eastern Europe and Central Asia.

The land here has many different shapes and features. Most of the area sits on the Eurasian Plate. However, the eastern part sits on different plates. There are three very large plains in the region. These are the West Siberian Plain and the Central Siberian Plateau. The Verhoyansk-Chukotka zone is also a major part.

In the west, the Ural Mountains mark the border of Europe. The east has many active volcanoes. These are part of a group called the Ring of Fire. You can see peaks like Koryaksky there.

Long ago, the land changed in big ways. A massive eruption happened 250 million years ago. This created the Siberian Traps. This event happened during the Permian–Triassic extinction.

Humans first arrived in the region about 45,000 years ago. Many different groups lived here for a long time. These included the Ainu and the Mongolic peoples. Later, Russia began to take control of the land. This started in the 16th century. The region became part of Russia over many years.

North Asia is very large but has few people. There are about 37 million people living there. This is only 0.74% of all people in Asia.

Most people are of European descent. Over 85% of the people come from Europe. The indigenous people make up about 5% of the population. Some groups include the Buryats and the Yakuts.

Other groups like the Tatars also live in Siberia. Many people moved from European Russia to get here. Between 1801 and 1914, about 7 million people moved there.

Today, the region is very important for its resources. It has huge amounts of oil and natural gas. It also has many metals and coal.

The Trans-Siberian Railway helps move these things. It connects Moscow to Vladivostok. This long path helps carry timber and coal to other places. Russia is also building new paths like the Power of Siberia pipeline. This pipeline carries gas to China. The region still faces hard jobs because of its size and weather.
