The European Plain is a huge, flat part of Europe.

It is the largest area in Europe without mountains. This land stretches all the way from the Pyrenees in the west. It reaches the Ural Mountains far to the east. Many different countries sit on this land. These include Belgium, Germany, Poland, and Ukraine. It also covers parts of France, Denmark, and even Kazakhstan. Most of this area is very low to the ground. In fact, most of it stays below 500 feet high.

Water plays a big part in this landscape.

Many important rivers cut through the soil. In the west, you can find the Loire and Rhine rivers. The Vistula river is also there. In the east, rivers like the Volga and the Don flow south. Some rivers, like the Northern Dvina, flow north instead. The plain also meets many different seas. You can find the Atlantic Ocean in the west. The Arctic Ocean is in the northeast. The Black Sea sits in the southeast.

This land has changed a lot over time.

Long ago, thick forests covered most of the plain. People eventually moved in and cleared the trees. This is called deforestation. One of the last big pieces of old forest is the Białowieża Forest. It sits on the border of Poland and Belarus. Today, the plain looks very different. It is now a top place for farming in Europe. Most of the land is used to grow food. The far eastern part has more open grass called steppe.

The plain is split into two main parts. These are the North European Plain and the East European Plain. The North part is often called the Middle European Plain. The East part includes the Russian Plain. This Russian part covers almost all of European Russia. The land is not the same width everywhere. In the north, the plain is quite narrow. As you move toward the east, the land gets much wider. This makes the landscape feel very open and vast.

Because the land is so flat, it is very important for people. It is a great place for trade and big industries. The European Union uses the plain for much of its farming. It is also a major place for making renewable energy. However, the flat land can be hard for some countries. It offers very little protection from invaders. This has caused problems for places like Poland, France, and Russia. In the past, many armies used the open space to move. Today, the plain is home to many famous historical sites.
