It stretches about 8,000 kilometres across the continent of Eurasia. This vast area goes from Manchuria all the way to Europe. It passes through many countries like Mongolia, Kazakhstan, and Russia. It also covers parts of Ukraine, Bulgaria, and Hungary. This land is a special type of place called a temperate grassland. It is mostly made of shrubs and many types of grass.

The steppe is crossed by many mountain ranges. These mountains did not stop people from moving across the land. To the south, the land gets much drier. It eventually turns into deserts like the Gobi. To the north, the land becomes wetter and turns into forests.

For a very long time, this area was a famous path. It is called the Steppe Route. This route helped people move between East Asia and Europe. It was a way to share goods and ideas. This path was a predecessor to the famous Silk Road.

Many strong groups lived here as nomads. These included the Xiongnu, the Scythians, and the Mongol Empire. They moved across the land with their animals. Some people even lived in portable homes called yurts.

Many interesting animals live in the tall grass. You might see a Przewalski's horse or a wild Bactrian camel.

There are also gazelles and saiga antelopes. Predators like the gray wolf and the Pallas's cat roam the area. Some birds, like the imperial eagle, live here too. Humans have raised sheep and goats on the steppe for a long time. They also used horses for travel and for fighting. The horse was first domesticated here before 3000 BC.

Today, the steppe looks different in many places. Some parts are still wild grasslands. Other parts are used for farming by people.
