A plain is a very large area of flat land.

You might call it a flatland. These areas have very few steep or sudden changes in height. Plains are one of the most important landforms on our planet. They are found on every single continent. In fact, they cover more than one-third of all land on Earth.

Some plains sit in valleys between hills. Others are coastal plains near the sea. You can also find them at the base of mountains.

Many different things can create a plain. Some are made by flowing lava that cools into a flat surface. Others form when water, ice, or wind move sediment. Sediment is just bits of rock and dirt that settle in new places. Rivers can create alluvial plains by leaving soil behind. Glaciers can also make plains as they move. They might leave behind layered sand or unsorted material called till.

Some plains even start as the bottom of an old lake. These are called lacustrine plains.

Nature makes plains look very different depending on where they are. Some plains are covered in green grasslands or thick forests. Others might be tropical savannas or cold, icy tundras. Some places are so dry they are considered deserts.

Because the land is so flat, it is great for farming. The soil from rivers is often deep and fertile. This helps crops grow very well. The flatness also makes it easy to use big machines for farm work. Many plains are also good for grazing livestock.

There are many famous plains around the world. In South America, the Pampas are huge, fertile grasslands. In North America, you can find the Great Plains. Asia has many, like the North China Plain or the Kantō Plain in Japan.

Even in space, we find plains. The Latin word for plain is planitia. Scientists use this name for flat areas on other worlds. For example, Mars has the Hellas Planitia. Venus has the Sedna Planitia.

Plains connect to many parts of our world. They can be part of a larger region. Some plains are enclosed by a ring of mountains or cliffs. Other plains might be connected by a narrow gap or pass.

You can see how they sit in the landscape in many photos. The map of a place can show where a plain begins and ends. Whether they are deep in the ocean or high in the mountains, plains are everywhere.
