Woodland

life science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

A woodland is a special kind of land covered with woody plants. These plants include both trees and shrubs. In a woodland, the trees are spread out. This creates an open habitat with plenty of sunlight. Because there is so much light, there is limited shade. This allows many other things to grow on the ground. You might see an understory of grasses and small plants.

How a woodland works depends on how much shade it makes. In North America, woodlands have more shade than a savanna. However, they have less shade than a thick forest. Many woodlands in central North America use oak trees. These areas often need regular fire to stay healthy. Fire helps keep the many different types of life growing there. This process helps maintain the biodiversity of the land.

Different places have different names for these areas. In the United Kingdom, people use the term ancient woodland. This means the land has been wooded since the year 1600. Some of these places may be thousands of years old. They might have existed since the last Ice Age. In Australia, people use numbers to define a woodland. They call an area with 10 to 30 percent tree cover a woodland.

There are many types of woodlands across the whole world. In Australia, an open woodland has less than 10 percent tree cover. Some woodlands are tall and others are low. You can find Miombo woodlands in Malawi and Angola. There are also Limber Pine woodlands in the Toiyabe Range of Nevada. In Africa, the Sahel woodland is found in Mali. Even deserts have xeric woodlands in places like Afghanistan.

We can see how woodlands connect to our own world. People work hard to protect these lands from being turned into farms. In the United States, the Indiana Dunes help save woodlands in Northwest Indiana. Many old forests in the eastern United States were once used for lumber. People used the wood for paper pulp and telephone poles. Today, we learn how important these open spaces are for nature.
