A heath is a special kind of land covered in low shrubs.

This habitat grows in places with sandy soil. The soil is often acidic and lacks much food for plants. It is also very free-draining, which means water moves through it easily. These areas can be quite dry and hard during the summer. Heaths are found on almost every continent except Antarctica.

Many living things depend on the heath to survive. In Australia, the heathlands are home to about 3,700 unique plant species. The fynbos heath in South Africa is even more diverse. It has over 7,000 species, which is nearly as much as a tropical rainforest. Many insects like ants, moths, and wasps live there too. One special insect is the silver-studded blue butterfly.

Birds also find homes in these shrublands. In Australia, many birds like honey-eaters and lorikeets eat nectar. You can also see large animals like emus or eagles there. In Europe, the birds are different and more specific to the area. You might see a Montagu's harrier or a tree pipit. South African heaths have sunbirds, warblers, and siskins.

Some heaths were actually made by people. These are called anthropogenic heaths. For hundreds of years, humans cleared forests by burning or grazing animals. This helped the low shrubs grow instead of tall trees. If people stop managing the land, the forest will grow back. This is why people use grazing or a burning method called swailing.

Today, many people work to protect these habitats. They have great cultural and historical value. We must watch out for things like urban sprawl. We also have to stop trees from moving into the open spaces. Without care, parts of the heath can turn into bare sand dunes. This makes the land more likely to have wildfires.
