Shrubland

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Shrubland is a special kind of plant community. It is mostly made of shrubs. These are woody plants with many stems. Shrubs can also live alongside grasses and herbs. Some shrublands are stable and stay the same for a long time. Other shrublands are temporary. They might appear after a fire or when people change the land. Some areas are too dangerous for people to live in because of fire risks.

Shrubs come in many different sizes. A tall shrub is usually 2 to 8 meters high. Small shrubs are between 1 and 2 meters tall. Subshrubs are even smaller at less than 1 meter. Scientists use a system to describe how they grow. They look at the height and how much leaf cover there is. High shrubs can have dense leaves that cover 70 to 100 percent of the area. They can also be very sparse with less than 10 percent cover.

People have used the word shrubland for a long time. The term was officially coined in 1903. This was in the Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary. Many different parts of the world have their own names for these places. In California, the thick shrubs are called chaparral. In Chile, Mexico, and Spain, they are called matorral. Italy calls them macchia. South Africa has a famous type called fynbos.

Shrublands can be found in many climates. Desert scrublands grow in very dry places. These plants have small leaves to stop water loss. They might have thorns to keep animals away. Some have succulent parts to store water. Other shrublands grow near the ocean. These plants can handle salt air and wind. In France, these coastal areas are called garrigue. In Greece, they are known as phrygana.

Nature has many ways to keep shrublands growing. Fire is a big part of how they work. Some shrubs use fire to help their seeds grow. Other plants have lignotubers to survive. These are special parts that help them bounce back. Some shrublands are also found in areas with poor soil. This happens in the matas of Portugal. You can even find dwarf shrubs in moorlands.
