A shrub is a woody plant that stays small or medium in size.

These plants are different from soft, herbaceous plants because they have hard stems above the ground. Shrubs are often easy to tell apart from trees. Most shrubs have many stems instead of one single trunk. They are also much shorter than most trees. Some very small shrubs are called subshrubs.

While many shrubs live for about eight years, some larger ones can live past 70 years.

Shrubs use their many stems to help them grow and survive. Having many stems gives the plant more surface area for photosynthesis. This is the way the plant makes food using light.

More stems also mean more area for the plant to sprout new growth. If one stem dies, the others can keep the plant alive. This many-stemmed way of growing can help shrubs grow faster than trees in the early stages. Some shrubs can even grow in extreme places like high alpine areas.

People have studied these plants for a very long time. An ancient Greek philosopher named Theophrastus once divided the plant world into three groups. He called them trees, shrubs, and herbs.

Today, scientists look at how shrubs shape the land. In some parts of the world, large areas are covered in shrubs. These areas are called shrublands. There are many types of shrublands, such as fynbos, maquis, and shrub swamps.

Shrubs are very useful in gardens and for making things.

People plant them in special areas called shrubberies or shrub gardens. Some shrubs are grown just for their colorful flowers, like rhododendrons. Others are used to make perfumes, such as rose or lavender. Some shrubs even have medicinal uses. Even tea and coffee come from plants that are often shrub-sized. If those plants were left to grow much longer, they might become small trees.

You can see how shrubs work by looking at their leaves. Some shrubs are deciduous, which means they lose their leaves. Others are evergreen, so they stay green all year long.

Gardeners also use pruning to help shrubs look nice. They might use renewal pruning to cut a plant back to a stool. This helps the plant grow long new stems called canes. You might also see shrubs shaped into art, which is called topiary. This happens when shrubs have many small branches growing close together.
