Shrub

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

A shrub, also known as a bush, is a perennial woody plant. Perennial means the plant lives for many years. Unlike herbaceous plants, which have soft stems, shrubs possess persistent woody stems above the ground.

Shrubs are typically defined by their shorter height and multiple stems. While trees usually have one main trunk, most shrubs have several stems that branch out from near or below the ground level. Some very small shrubs are called subshrubs.

Shrubs can be categorized by how they handle their leaves. Deciduous shrubs, such as the hawthorn, lose their leaves seasonally. Evergreen shrubs, such as holly, keep their foliage throughout the year.

In botanical terms, ecologists also look at the canopy structure of these plants. This involves measuring how much foliage cover the plants provide. For example, "closed-shrubs" have dense foliage covering 70% to 100% of the area. In contrast, "open-shrubs" have mid-dense foliage covering only 30% to 70%.

Scientists have studied the evolutionary advantages of the shrub growth form. One hypothesis involves the total surface area available for photosynthesis. Photosynthesis is the process plants use to make food from light. Because shrubs have many stems, they have a larger total stem area. This includes more area for the cambium and phloem, which are internal plant tissues.

This extra surface area may allow shrubs to grow faster than trees during their early stages. Having multiple stems also provides a safety net. If one stem dies, the other stems can keep the plant alive.

Shrubs also play a major role in shaping global landscapes. Large areas of land dominated by various shrubs are called shrublands. There are many distinct types of shrublands across the world. These include fynbos, maquis, shrub-steppe, shrub swamp, and moorland.

In recent decades, scientists have observed "shrubification" in the arctic. This is a marked increase in shrublands in those cold regions. This change is linked to increased temperatures, which affects the carbon balance of the environment.

Human history includes long-standing observations of these plants. The ancient Greek philosopher Theophrastus was among the first to categorize the plant world. He divided plants into three distinct groups: trees, shrubs, and herbs.

Today, shrubs remain highly important in horticulture and gardening. People create dedicated areas for them called shrubberies, shrub borders, or shrub gardens. Many garden cultivars are specifically bred for unique flower colors or leaf shapes. For instance, rhododendrons are often grown for their impressive blooms.

Shrubs provide many resources for human use, though they are rarely used for timber. Trees are much larger and better suited for wood production. However, shrubs are vital for other industries. Some species are used to create perfumes, such as rose and lavender. Others have important medicinal uses. Even common beverages like tea and coffee come from the shrub-tree boundary. These plants are typically harvested when they are shrub-sized. If left to grow, they could eventually become small trees.

Gardeners use specific techniques to manage shrub growth and appearance. One method is selective pruning, where gardeners remove dead or unattractive parts to show the plant's structure. Another method is renewal pruning. This involves cutting a plant back hard to a "stool," which is the base of the plant. This process encourages the growth of long new stems called canes.

Some shrubs are also used for topiary. This is the art of clipping plants into specific shapes. This works well with species that have dense foliage and many small, leafy branches growing close together.
