Rooibos is a special plant from South Africa.

It grows in a place called the Fynbos biome. This plant has a name that means "red bush" in Afrikaans. People use the thin, needle-like leaves to make a tasty drink. This drink is a herbal infusion, which is a way of making tea by soaking leaves in water. Most people love it because it has no caffeine. This means it will not make you feel jumpy like some other teas.

Making the tea involves a specific way it works. Most rooibos leaves go through oxidation. This is a process where the leaves react with air to change. This step creates the famous reddish-brown color and a deep flavor. Some people prefer green rooibos instead. This version is made using a different, harder method. It has a grassy taste and is more expensive to make.

Learning how to grow rooibos was a long journey. In the past, people climbed mountains to cut wild leaves. They used donkeys to carry the leaves down steep slopes. Later, a man named Benjamin Ginsberg helped the industry. He was called the father of the rooibos industry. In 1904, he ran experiments to help cure the tea. He even used methods inspired by his own family's tea traditions.

Growing the plants for many people was once a hard job. The seeds were tiny and very difficult to grow. A naturalist named Pieter le Fras Nortier solved this problem. He used a method called scarification to help the seeds sprout. This means he rubbed the seeds between mill stones. This wore down the hard outer shell of the seed. Because of his work, the seeds became very valuable. At one time, they were the most expensive vegetable seeds in the world!
