The way rosemary grows is quite interesting. It has a fibrous root system to help it stay in the ground. The leaves are long, broad, and green on top, but they are white underneath. These undersides have dense, short, woolly hair.

In spring and summer, the plant grows flowers that can be white, pink, purple, or deep blue. In warm climates, it might bloom all year long. It can even flower in the winter, sometimes as early as mid-February. As the plant gets very old, it may release chemicals into the soil. These chemicals can stop other plants from growing nearby.

People have studied and named rosemary for many centuries. The scientist Carl Linnaeus first described it in 1753 as Rosmarinus officinalis. Later, in 2017, experts changed its name to Salvia rosmarinus. They did this because of new evidence about how the plant is related to others.

The name rosemary comes from two Latin words that mean "sea-dew." This is because the plant grows best near the sea. Long ago, the Romans may have brought it to Britain around 43 CE. Later, in the 1300s, cuttings were sent to Queen Philippa to grow in her palace gardens.

Rosemary is used in many ways in our daily lives. Many cooks use the leaves to flavor stews, meats, and marinades. You can use the leaves when they are fresh or dried.

Some people even use the woody stem as a skewer for cooking. The plant also provides oil that is used in perfumes and shampoos. This oil contains many different parts, including something called camphor. In the 14th century, one of the first alcohol-based perfumes in Europe was made from distilled rosemary. It was called Hungary water.

Because it smells so good and looks pretty, rosemary is a popular garden plant. People use it to make hedges or beautiful shapes called topiary. It is easy to grow in pots, too.

In many cultures, rosemary is a symbol of remembrance. In plays by William Shakespeare, rosemary is linked to memory. In Australia, people wear sprigs of rosemary on special days to remember those who died in wars. It is a plant that connects food, scent, and history all at once.
