People love it because it has a very strong and special scent. This smell comes from tiny parts called volatile aromatic compounds. For example, sweet basil smells like cloves because it has a part called eugenol. Many people use it to make pesto, a famous Italian sauce made with olive oil. You might also find it in soups, salads, or even chocolate truffles.

Growing basil is a fun way to watch a plant change.

The plant has square stems and glossy leaves. These leaves can be green or even purple. They often have smooth or slightly toothed edges. The plant grows small white flowers on a central spike. After insects visit the flowers, the plant makes small round seeds called achenes. If you want more leaves, you can pinch off the flower stems. This helps the plant keep growing new leaves instead of making seeds.

Basil has a very long and interesting history. The name comes from Latin and Greek words. These words mean "royal" or "kingly plant." Some people think it was used to make perfumes for kings. In French, it is even called "the royal herb." Long ago, some people thought it could protect against the venom of a basilisk. This is a mythical creature from old stories. Even though it started in tropical places, people now grow it everywhere.

There are at least 60 different varieties of basil.

Some are very common, like Genovese basil or sweet basil. Others have very different smells, such as cinnamon basil or lemon basil. There are also hybrids, which are plants made by mixing two different types. One example is lemon basil, which is used in Indonesia. You can find Thai basil growing in schools in Thailand. Some varieties, like "Purple Delight," have beautiful purple leaves instead of green ones.

Basil likes to live in warm and sunny places. It is a tender plant that does not like the cold. It grows best in soil that lets water drain away easily. You can grow it in a big garden or in a small pot on a windowsill. If you live in a cold place, you might need to grow it under glass.

Some people even use special lights to help it grow. While it is a food, basil also has other uses. Scientists have found that its oil can help repel certain insects.
