Cloves are the dried flower buds of a special evergreen tree.

These trees belong to the Myrtaceae family and can grow quite tall. The buds start with a pale color and slowly turn green. Eventually, they become a bright red color when they are ready to be picked.

People love cloves because they have a very strong and pleasant smell. This scent comes from a part of the plant called eugenol. You might find this smell in your toothpaste, soaps, or even fancy cosmetics.

There are many ways to use these little spice buds. In many kitchens, people add them to meats like baked ham. They are also used in curries, marinades, and sweet fruits like apples or pears. Some people enjoy adding them to hot drinks with lemon and sugar. In Mexico, they are called "clavos de olor" and go well with cinnamon. In Peru, they are used in dishes like arroz con leche. You only need a small amount because the flavor is so strong.

Cloves have a very long and interesting history. They are native to the Maluku Islands in Indonesia. Long ago, the Austronesian peoples traded them through huge sea networks.

Archaeologists even found evidence of cloves in a burned house in Syria from 1720 BC. In ancient China, officials had a special rule for using them. They would suck on cloves to sweeten their breath before speaking to the emperor. This helped them smell good during important meetings.

Many different places around the world grow cloves today. Indonesia is the largest producer of this spice in the world. Other big producers include Madagascar, Tanzania, Sri Lanka, and Comoros. In the past, the Dutch East India Company tried to control the trade. They wanted a monopoly, which means they wanted to be the only ones selling them. However, clove trees grew all over the Maluku Islands. This made it very hard for one company to control everything. One very old clove tree named Afo is on the island of Ternate. Experts believe this tree might be 350 to 400 years old!

Besides cooking, cloves can be used for other helpful jobs. Clove oil is often used as a way to help with toothache pain. It is a common part of traditional medicine for dental emergencies. People also use the oil in aromatherapy to enjoy the scent. Some even use it to help protect wood from damage. In Victorian England, people made fragrant ornaments called pomanders using cloves and oranges. Giving a pomander as a gift was a way to show warmth and kindness.
