The crocus is a special group of seasonal flowering plants. They belong to the iris family, which scientists call Iridaceae.

There are about 100 different species in this group. Most of them are perennials, which means they live for many years. They grow from round underground parts called corms. These corms are shaped like spheres or flattened balls.

Because they are low-growing, their flower stems often stay under the soil. Many people grow them just to see their pretty flowers. These blooms can appear in the autumn, winter, or spring.

These plants have a very interesting way of growing. The corm stays under the ground and sends out roots. Some roots are contractile, which means they can pull the corm deeper into the soil.

The leaves are long and green with a strange shape. If you cut a leaf in half, it looks like a little boat. This boat shape has two sides that curve inward. The flowers emerge from the ground in colors like white, yellow, orange, or purple. They often close up tight at night or when it is cloudy. The flower stems stay hidden until the fruit is ready to grow.

People have known about the crocus for a very long time. Ancient writers like Theophrastus described them hundreds of years ago.

The Romans brought them to Britain to use as a dye. Later, the Crusaders brought them back to Western Europe. In the 1500s, writers like William Turner and John Gerard wrote about them. They noticed that some crocuses were used for spice. By the 1600s, experts like John Parkinson could tell different types apart. They knew which ones were true saffron and which were not.

One specific type is the *Crocus sativus*. This plant is famous because it produces saffron.

Saffron comes from the dried stigma, which is a small part inside the flower. This spice is one of the most expensive in the world. It is used for cooking and for making dyes. Most of the world's saffron is grown in Iran.

Crocuses are found in many places, from the Mediterranean to China. They grow in meadows, woods, and even high mountains.

Scientists have worked hard to group these plants correctly. In 1753, a scientist named Linnaeus gave them formal names. He used the plant's parts to decide how to classify them. Later, other experts like Jussieu and Maw helped improve these groups.

Today, we use DNA and other modern methods to study them. We now know they belong to a large group called Asparagales. Learning about the crocus helps us understand how plants adapt to different seasons. It shows how a tiny underground corm can create such beautiful life.
