Most true lilies grow in the Northern Hemisphere. They like temperate climates and can also live in subtropics. You might hear people use the word "lily" for other plants. However, many of those are not true lilies. One very important thing to know is that true lilies are highly toxic to cats.

Some lilies have bulbs that are naked or have scales. In North America, some species grow small bulbs on parts called rhizomes. Most bulbs stay deep in the ground. A few species grow their bulbs near the soil surface. Some lilies even have contractile roots. These roots help move the bulb deeper into the soil. Many species also grow stem-roots to help them grow.

The flowers of a lily are often large and smell strong. They come in many colors like white, yellow, orange, pink, red, and purple. Some flowers even have spots or brush strokes on them.

The flowers usually bloom in late spring or summer. They have six tepals, which are parts that look like petals. These tepals can spread out or curve back. This makes the flower look like a funnel or a "Turk's cap." Each flower also has a nectary at its base. The fruit of the plant is a three-celled capsule.

These species are divided into seven different sections. These sections include Martagon, Pseudolirium, and Liriotypus. Other sections are Archelirion, Sinomartagon, Leucolirion, and Daurolirion. Researchers use different lists to decide which names are correct. For example, they use the Flora of China to study Chinese species.

Many people grow them in gardens because they are pretty. Some lilies, like the Easter lily, are used as cut flowers. In the wild, deer can be a problem for them. Deer like to eat the plants, so people sometimes use high fences. This helps protect the lilies in gardens and in nature.
