Peonies are beautiful plants that people love to grow in gardens.

They belong to a group called Paeoniaceae. This group includes the genus Paeonia. Scientists think there are between 25 and 40 different species. Most experts agree there are 33 known species today. These plants grow in many colors like red, pink, white, or yellow. They often have a very sweet smell. Most peonies only bloom for a short time. This blooming season usually lasts between 7 and 10 days.

These plants have a very interesting way they work. They use thick roots to store food for later. They also use thin roots to gather water and minerals from the soil.

Most peonies are herbaceous perennials. This means they are living things that live for many years. Some peonies are woody shrubs instead. The flowers are often large and sit at the end of a stem. The flowers have many parts like petals and stamens. Stamens are the parts that hold pollen. A single flower can have 50 to 160 stamens.

People have studied these plants for a long time. In 1830, a man named Friedrich K.L. Rudolphi used the name Paeoniaceae. He did this after a suggestion from Friedrich Gottlieb Bartling.

Artists have also loved them for centuries. For example, the artist Wang Qian painted peonies during the Yuan dynasty. Another artist named Yun Shouping made portraits of these flowers too. These paintings show how much people value the plant's beauty.

Peonies grow in many different parts of the world. They live in the temperate and cold areas of the Northern Hemisphere. You can find them in Asia, Europe, and Western North America.

Some species, like P. brownii, live in North America. Others, like the Moutan section, are only found in Central and Southern China. One species called P. anomala has a huge home. It grows from Russia all the way to Kazakhstan. Many other species live around the Mediterranean sea.

Learning about peonies helps us see how plants connect. They are part of a large group of plants called Saxifragales. Scientists use genetic studies to see how they are related to others. Even though they look simple, they have many complex parts. For instance, they use a way of making food called C3 carbon fixation. They also have many special compounds inside them. These include things like tannins and flavonoids. Understanding these plants helps us learn more about the natural world.
