Peony

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Peonies are a diverse group of flowering plants belonging to the genus Paeonia. They are the only members of the family Paeoniaceae. Scientists are still studying how many different species exist. Estimates range from 25 to 40 species. However, the current scientific consensus identifies 33 known species. These plants are highly valued in temperate regions as garden plants. They are also widely sold as cut flowers during their blooming season.

Most peonies are herbaceous perennials, meaning they live for many years and die back to the ground. Some species are woody shrubs instead. To survive, they use two different types of roots. They have thick storage roots to hold nutrients. They also have thin roots to gather water and minerals from the soil. The annual growth of a peony is predetermined. If the growing tip of a shoot is removed, no new buds will develop during that season.

The flowers of the peony are quite complex. They are large, bisexual flowers that often appear at the end of a stem. The flowers may close at night or when the sky is overcast. Each flower has 3 to 7 tough sepals. They typically have 5 to 8 petals, but some can have up to 13. Inside, there are between 50 and 160 free stamens. These stamens hold pollen grains that have three slits or pores. At the center, there are 1 to 15 separate carpels. These carpels develop into dry fruits called follicles. Each follicle contains one or more large, fleshy seeds.

Taxonomy is the science of naming and classifying these plants. The family name Paeoniaceae was first used by Friedrich K.L. Rudolphi in 1830. This followed a suggestion by Friedrich Gottlieb Bartling in the same year. For a long time, scientists thought peonies were closely related to the genus Glaucidium. However, modern molecular phylogenetic studies have changed this view. These genetic studies proved that Glaucidium belongs to the family Ranunculaceae. In contrast, Paeonia belongs to a completely different order called Saxifragales.

The genus Paeonia is divided into three main sections. The first is the section Moutan, which contains all the woody tree peonies. These are found in Central and Southern China, including Tibet. The second is the section Onaepia. This section includes only two species: P. brownii and P. californica. These are found in Western North America. The third is the section Paeonia, which contains the rest of the herbaceous species. This section stretches from Morocco and Spain all the way to Japan.

Peonies are found across the Northern Hemisphere in temperate and cold areas. The species P. anomala has the largest distribution of any peony. It grows from the Kola peninsula in Russia to the Tien Shan Mountains in Kazakhstan. Other species are more localized. For example, P. algeriensis is found only in the coastal mountains of Algeria. Some species, like P. lactiflora, are very common in gardens. Many other species are the result of complex hybridization. This means they formed when two different species bred together.

Scientists have discovered over 262 chemical compounds within the Paeoniaceae family. These include substances like flavonoids, tannins, and steroids. They also contain calcium oxalate crystals and ethereal oils. These plants use a process called C3 carbon fixation to make food. In laboratories, these compounds have shown various biological activities. These include antioxidant and cardiovascular-system-protective activities. Understanding these chemicals helps scientists learn more about plant biology and medicine.
