Some tulips even have a colorful blotch at the base of their petals. These petals are called tepals because they look like both petals and sepals.

These plants grow using a special way of living. They are bulbiferous geophytes, which means they grow from an underground bulb. This bulb acts like a storage tank for the plant. In the spring, a new shoot grows up from the bulb. The flowers and leaves bloom during the temperate spring weather. Once the flowers die, the plant becomes dormant in the summer.

Tulips became very famous in the Netherlands during the 1600s. This led to a time called the Dutch tulip mania from 1634 to 1637. During this time, people valued tulips very highly. One famous tulip was called the "Semper Augustus." It was white with carmine colors on a blue base.
