life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Pears are delicious fruits that grow on trees in the Pyrus genus. These trees belong to the Rosaceae family. Most pear trees are medium-sized, but some grow as small shrubs. They love living in temperate regions where the weather is mild. Many of these trees are deciduous, meaning they lose their leaves each year. However, a few species in Southeast Asia are evergreen and stay green.

Growing a pear fruit is a very interesting way it works. The fruit is what scientists call a pome. This means the part we eat is actually a swollen part of the flower stalk. Inside the soft flesh, you will find the true fruit. This is the core, which holds two to five small parts called carpels. Pears come in many shapes, from round like an apple to the classic pear shape.

People have been enjoying pears for a very long time. Evidence shows people used them as food in prehistoric times. In China, people were already growing pears as early as 2000 BC. The Romans also loved them and ate them both raw and cooked. One Roman cookbook even had a recipe for a pear soufflé.
