Rosaceae

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The Rosaceae family is a huge group of flowering plants. It includes about 4,828 known species across 91 different genera. This family is very important to humans because we use it for so much. We eat many delicious fruits from these plants every single day. We also grow many of them just to look at. They are found almost everywhere on Earth except for Antarctica. Most of these plants live in the Northern Hemisphere.

These plants come in many different shapes and sizes. Some are large woody trees that grow very tall. Others are small shrubs or plants that climb up walls. Some are even soft herbs that grow close to the ground. Most species are deciduous, which means they lose their leaves each year. However, some species are evergreen and stay green all year. You can find them in many habitats that are not deserts or rainforests.

Let's look at how these plants are built. Most flowers are showy and have a radial symmetry. This means they look the same from many sides. They usually have five sepals and five petals. They also have many stamens arranged in a spiral. A special part called a hypanthium holds the flower parts together. This part is a cup-like structure at the base.

Scientists have studied these plants for a very long time. In 1964, a scientist named Schulze-Menz looked at different groups. Later, in 1997, Takhtajan identified 21 tribes and 10 subfamilies. Today, researchers use a more modern model with three main subfamilies. One of these is called Rosoideae, which has stayed mostly the same. It is still hard to count every single species. This is because some plants make seeds without needing to be pollinated.

Many things in your kitchen come from the Rosaceae family. You might eat an apple, a pear, or a peach. Plums, cherries, and apricots are also part of this group. Even small berries like strawberries and raspberries belong here. Some plants like almonds are also in this family. You should be careful with the seeds, though. Some seeds contain a substance that can release cyanide if they are damaged.
