Rosaceae

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The rose family is a very large group of plants. It has about 4,828 known species. These plants grow almost everywhere on Earth. They live in many places except Antarctica. Most of them grow in the Northern Hemisphere.

Plants in this family look very different. Some are big woody trees. Others are small shrubs or climbers. Some are even soft herbs. Many of these plants lose their leaves in winter. But some stay green all year long.

Many plants in this family make food we love. You can eat apples and pears. You can also eat cherries, plums, and peaches. Strawberries and raspberries are in this family too.

People also grow them to look pretty. We call these ornamental plants. Roses are very popular for this. Some plants in this family can be weeds. In some places, these weeds can hurt local nature. Some plants even make rose oil. This oil is used in a big business. Most of these plants have showy flowers. The flowers often have five petals. They also have a cup-like part called a hypanthium. This part holds the base of the flower parts together.
