Blackberries are tasty fruits that grow on long, woody stems called canes.

These plants belong to a large group with over 375 different species. Many of these species grow all over the world. You can find them in Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Americas. They are very useful to farmers because they produce a lot of fruit. However, some types can grow so fast that they become weeds. In the Pacific Northwest of North America, the Himalayan blackberry is a noxious weed. This means it grows out of control in parks and woods.

There is a special way these plants grow each year. In the first year, a new stem is called a primocane. This stem grows long and has large leaves, but it does not make flowers. In the second year, the stem becomes a floricane. This is the stem that produces flowers in late spring or early summer.

The flowers have five white or pink petals. Tiny insects like bees visit these flowers to help them grow.

Each flower makes a fruit made of many small parts called drupelets. A blackberry is different from a raspberry because the core stays with the fruit when you pick it.

People have been studying and growing different kinds of blackberries for a long time. In 1880, a man named James Harvey Logan created the loganberry. This was a special hybrid between a blackberry and a raspberry.

Later, scientists worked to make the plants easier to pick. In 1921, one of the first thornless varieties was made. More recently, the US Department of Agriculture developed many new thornless types. These include names like Triple Crown and Black Diamond. These new plants have better flavor and are easier to harvest with machines.

Different places in the world grow blackberries in different ways. Mexico is a very big producer of blackberries for the world. In 2017, Mexico provided almost all the fresh blackberries sent to the United States.

In the United States, Oregon is the leader in growing them for business. Some special plants, like the 'Illini Hardy', can survive very cold winters. This variety survived temperatures as low as -20°F in Illinois. Other types, like the 'Tupy' from Brazil, are very popular in Mexico. Scientists use these different varieties to make sure we have fruit all year.

Blackberries are a very important part of nature. Many animals love to eat the ripe fruit. Red foxes, American black bears, and Eurasian badgers all eat them.

Even small birds enjoy the berries. When animals eat the fruit, they spread the seeds to new places. This helps the plants grow in new spots. Some insects, like certain caterpillars, even use the leaves for food. This shows how many living things rely on the blackberry to survive.
