Rubus is a very large group of flowering plants.

Most people know these plants as brambles. This group belongs to the rose family.

You might recognize their fruit as raspberries or blackberries. They also include dewberries and bristleberries. These plants are found on almost every continent. The only place they do not grow is Antarctica. There are between 250 and over 1,000 different species.

This makes them a very diverse group of living things.

Many Rubus plants grow as shrubs.

Their woody stems often have sharp prickles. Some species have spines or tiny hairs instead. These stems are often called canes. Many people grow cane fruits on wires or supports. This helps the plants grow straight. The plants have a clever way of spreading. Long shoots grow and arch toward the ground. When a shoot touches the soil, it starts to grow roots.

These plants usually take two years to flower. This means they are biennial. The main root system stays in the ground every year.

The fruit of a bramble is very special.

Rubus chamaemorus fruit

It is called an aggregate fruit. This means the fruit is made of many tiny parts. Each tiny part is called a drupelet.

Most flowers in this group are hermaphrodites. This means one flower has both male and female parts. Scientists also study how many chromosomes these plants have. Most species have more than two copies of each chromosome. This is called being polyploid. Some species have as many as 14 copies.

Learning about Rubus is a hard job for scientists.

This is because the plants mix and change so often. A German botanist named Wilhelm Olbers Focke studied them. Between 1910 and 1914, he organized them into 12 groups. These groups are called subgenera. Modern studies use genetics to look at them more closely. Scientists found fossils that are 34 million years old.

These fossils were found in Colorado. This suggests the group likely started in North America.

You can find Rubus plants in many different places.

Some grow in the cold, like the Arctic raspberry. Others grow in tropical places, like the Hawaiian species. You might see a red raspberry in your kitchen.

You might also see a blackberry in a forest. These plants link to the food we eat every day. They show how plants can adapt to many climates. From snowy mountains to warm gardens, they are everywhere. It is fun to look for them in nature.
