Ribes is a large group of about 200 different flowering plant species.

Most of these plants live in the temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere. You can find them growing in meadows or near streams. Some species even grow in the mountains of South America. These plants are very important to many living things. They provide food for animals and are often grown by people for fruit.

Most Ribes plants are medium-sized shrubs. They can have leaves that are lobed or compound. Some species even grow sharp thorns on their stems. The flowers come in colors like green, yellow, or red. Most of these flowers rely on insects to help them pollinate. However, some special flowers are pollinated by hummingbirds.

After pollination, the plant grows a berry. These berries contain many small seeds inside. Birds and mammals like elk, deer, or grizzly bears eat the fruit. This helps the plant spread its seeds to new places.

Scientists have studied how to group these plants for a long time. In 1907, researchers began treating the group on a worldwide basis. Since then, the way we classify them has changed many times. Some experts once thought Ribes and Grossularia were two separate groups. Now, most scientists agree they are one single genus. It is divided into subgenera like Ribes, which includes currants, and Grossularia, which includes gooseberries. Even with modern tools, scientists still find new evidence about their history.

There are many specific types of Ribes to know. Common edible ones include blackcurrants, redcurrants, and whitecurrants. The European gooseberry is another well-known species. People also grow ornamental plants called flowering currants to make gardens look pretty. In the United States, some states have strict rules about growing them. For example, Maine prohibits planting blackcurrants. New York and North Carolina also have rules to protect their forests.

These plants connect to many parts of our world. Many people enjoy eating the fruit or drinking blackcurrant cordial. Some people even use them for traditional medicine. For instance, the Blackfoot people used blackcurrant root for certain health needs. However, Ribes can also cause trouble for trees. They are the main host for a fungus called white pine blister rust. This fungus can spread from the plant to five-needle pine trees. This makes the plants a very important part of forest health.
