These plants grow in many places. Most live in the Northern Hemisphere. You can find them in meadows or near streams. Some grow in the mountains of South America too.

Many Ribes plants are medium shrubs. Some even have thorns. They have flowers that can be red, yellow, or green. Most of these flowers are pollinated by insects. However, some flowers are visited by hummingbirds.

After the flowers bloom, they grow into berries. These berries have many seeds inside. Birds and mammals like elk or bears eat the fruit. This helps spread the seeds to new places.

People use many Ribes plants for food. We call some of them currants. These include red, white, and blackcurrants.

Others are called gooseberries. Some Ribes are grown just to look pretty in gardens. In the United States, some states have rules about growing them. This is to stop a fungus called white pine blister rust. This fungus can hurt certain pine trees.
