These plants belong to the Grossulariaceae family. They are native to northern Asia and the temperate parts of central and northern Europe. Blackcurrants love to grow in damp and fertile soil. They do not like it when the ground gets too dry. People grow these bushes in gardens and on large farms.

They are very useful because the fruit is full of vitamin C and polyphenols. These healthy parts are found in the fruit, the seeds, and even the leaves.

Growing fruit starts with small flowers on the plant. These flowers grow in long strings called racemes or "strigs." Most of the time, insects like bees help the flowers turn into fruit. Some wind also helps move the pollen around. When a pollen grain lands on the flower, it grows a tiny tube. This tube travels down to the ovule to help create a seed. In warm weather, this happens in about 48 hours. In cold weather, it might take a full week. If the plant does not fertilize at least 35 ovules, the fruit might fall off early.

People have been growing blackcurrants in Europe for a long time. It is thought that cultivation began around the last decades of the 17th century. Scientists and farmers have worked hard to make better plants. In the 20th century, many people in Europe worked on hybridisation. This means they mixed different plants to make new ones. Much of this work happened in Poland, New Zealand, and Scotland. In Britain, the Scottish Crop Research Institute helped create varieties that can handle the cold. They wanted plants that would ripen more evenly and resist diseases.

There are many different types of blackcurrant plants. Some are made for making juice, while others are for home gardens. For example, the 'Ben Hope' variety was released in 1998 to fight a tiny pest called the gall mite. Another variety called 'Ben Gairn' was also released in 1998 to resist a virus. In Finland, people grow a special kind called a "greencurrant."

These berries are green instead of dark purple. They are also sweeter and have a lighter smell than the regular kind. An established bush can produce about 2 kg of fruit every year.

Blackcurrants are a big part of how we enjoy food today. You can eat the berries raw, but many people prefer to cook them. They are used to make sweet jams, preserves, and thick syrups. Many people also drink blackcurrant juice.

Beyond food, the fruit can even be used to make dyes or alcoholic drinks. When farmers harvest them on a huge scale, they use big machines. These machines can pick up to 50 tonnes of fruit in just one day. This helps get the berries to the stores where we can enjoy them.
