This plant can grow as a tall tree or a wide shrub. Some trees reach heights of 15 meters. They often have a straight trunk and a shape like a pyramid. These plants are very tough and can live for as long as 300 years. Because they stay green all year, they are called evergreen trees.

How the holly works is quite interesting. The plant is dioecious, which means male and female parts are on separate trees. Only the female plants can grow the bright red or yellow berries. These berries are a type of stone fruit called a drupe. To make these fruits, a female plant needs a male plant nearby to provide pollen. The berries are very bitter when they first appear in October or November. However, a frost makes them softer and easier to eat. Then, birds and rodents eat them during the cold winter months.

Scientists have studied this plant for a very long time. A famous botanist named Linnaeus gave it its scientific name in 1753. He called it Ilex aquifolium, which uses Latin words for needle and leaf.

The name holly itself comes from Old English words. People have used holly in many ways throughout history. For example, it was used during the Roman festival of Saturnalia. Today, many people use its shiny leaves and red berries for Christmas decorations. You might see them on wreaths, garlands, or even holiday cards.

There are many specific facts about how a holly grows. The leaves are usually between 5 and 12 centimeters long. They are dark green on top and lighter on the bottom. Most leaves have sharp spines on the edges to protect the plant. Older trees in the shade often have smoother leaves. The bark of the tree is silver-grey and feels smooth. As the tree gets older, the bark may develop small cracks. The roots grow in a mat near the surface of the soil.

Holly connects to the world around us in many ways. It is a pioneer species, which means it helps new forests grow back. It can grow in many places, from the edges of forests to thick hedges. In some areas, like the West Coast of the United States, it can grow so fast that it crowds out other plants. This makes it an invasive species in those specific locations. In its native home, it provides a safe place for birds to hide. The prickly leaves create a thick wall that protects small animals from danger.
