It is often a tree or a shrub. Some holly trees grow very tall. They can reach 15 meters in height. Many grow as smaller, wide shrubs instead. These plants can live for 300 years.

Holly leaves are thick and dark green. They stay on the plant all year. This is called evergreen. Most leaves have sharp spines on the edges. These prickles help protect the plant. Some leaves are smooth instead of prickly.

The flowers are small and white. Holly is dioecious, which means male and female parts are on separate trees. Only female plants grow fruit. They need male plants nearby to make seeds. The fruit is a drupe, or a stone fruit.
